Emphermeral Art and The Audience

Thu Sep 24, 2009, 8:16 PM

So I went to an art show last night that was more about the performance then the physical object. For example one of the girls made a whole bunch of cakes, that everyone ate and that was her art work. Yet once it was eaten it was gone. There were other things as well.

Yet, I found it curious that the part I found most interesting was not the art work, but watching the way the people interacted with it. I found that the audience in some way became part of the art work or even the art work to some extent. There were a number of performance pieces as well and again I found watching the people watching the performers more interesting then what they were actually doing.

I found it interesting that in essence the art work was not just the performance or the physical piece of art but the audience as well. The whole thing would not have been the same without an audience, it would've had much less meaning if none at all.

Lol you're right that's what I get for doing things when I'm tired and in a hurry.

Oh... I interpreted it as an auspicious portent. :-)

Joking aside, I agree; it's interesting when the audience becomes part of the art.

I wonder what that says about that art though when the people are more interesting then the work its self. Does that mean the work is good because it gets the people involved?

Hmmm. Jury's still out on that one. Sometimes I've seen work so weird the audience is bumbling around trying to cope with it, and it's interesting to watch them. Other times, it could mean the work is just boring and doesn't hold your attention. But I think it depends on the work and one's own interests...

Yeah, that's true. I find it's interesting to see who's interest is actually held by a work especially when you know a number of people who are there.

I wonder if you could do a project like that somehow. With different images/or things hanging up and somehow get peoples reactions. So it's not really about persay what is hanging up but about the people. Maybe put everything in boxes and have it be really random things.... must think about this more when I'm more awake.

Sure you could do a project like that. I'm even waiting to see it! I like your example. Another example: Walk around with a friend who has a camera and some model release forms, and get your friend to snap people holding some bizarre object as a project for "advertising art" class, while you record the event, the reactions, and the surroundings on film. The "exhibit" would be your recording of the reactions of the victims who are asked to pose with the object, and the crowds. Just a thought. ';-)

Hmmmm... That could be interesting to. Or it could all be displayed together. I also have access to a digital cloth printer--assuming our department ever gets it up and running--it would be neat to use that. To display video, the actually objects and still images as well... It could be expanded from there to photograph people who show up to see it.
